It’s easy to find beauty in Gary, Indiana when you look in the right places. This photo was taken in October 2015 in Marquette Park near the lagoon. The sun hits the autumn grass just right under the large shade tree. I was lucky enough to find this spot when I did, because this scene only lasted for about fifteen minutes. There are many other features around the park as well as wildlife including fox and deer. Deer are known to come out in droves int he morning and evening hours throughout the Miller Beach community which lies just east of Marquette Park. Downtown Valparaiso has a new attraction: a state-of-the-art ice skating rink and pavilion known as the William E. Urschel Pavilion and ice skating is now open to the public. The new facility, conveniently located just west of Central Park Plaza and south of Lincolnway, is sure to draw in visitors from all over Porter County and even from both Lake and La Porte Counties. Northwest Indiana Ice Skating For years, Northwest Indiana has lacked sufficient ice skating facilities across the region and in the places where ice skating is available, time slots are often times very limited. For example, in St. John, Indiana, the Midwest Ice Arena houses mens leagues, high school hockey, skating lessons and more and is only able to accommodate open skating at odd hours such as 2:00-3:00pm on weekdays with no open skate on Saturdays. Pierogi Fest: an Annual Whiting, IN Tradition The chase is on for the pierogi at the annual Pierogi Fest in Whiting, Indiana. Held annually in the summer on the last weekend of July, Whiting’s Pierogi Fest has grown to cult proportions. The city closes down 119th Street in downtown Whiting from Indianapolis Blvd all the way to the lakefront and the street is open to pedestrians and vendors who sell pierogis and plenty of other food types including burgers, pizza and more. The Old Lake County Courthouse is arguably the most recognizable landmark in Northwest Indiana and has been widely used as the symbol of Lake County and the City of Crown Point, Indiana. Built in the 1870s, today the Lake County Courthouse houses stores and shops and also hosts weddings and receptions. The East Pier Lighthouse in Michigan City, Indiana is always a spectacular place to take photos year round. During colder winters, Lake Michigan often freezes up along the shoreline forming ice shelves which come in all sizes and shapes. In the summer, beautiful sunsets take place often times with a clear Chicago skyline in the background.
